Competitor Analysis

To understand the existing market of vocabulary learning applications and websites I analysed 3 apps. Memrise, Falou and Babble

Memrise

Language learning app that uses the system of flashcard learning. One can learn and revise through voice and testing so that one can test the new learning one has gained from the tasks. The app is user friendly and easy to access alongside navigate.

Falou

A language learning app that focuses on solving problems the user want to address with their learning. It is easy and colourful, giving the app a playful and interactive feel to engage viewers.

Babble

E-learning language app with a simple teaching approach where the theory learnt is put straight into practice. Users can review their learnings and exercise already completed.

User Interview

To gather insights into what my users look for in a Vocabulary learning app I conducted user interviews with 3 people who are into learning a new language and summarised the findings from the interview into 3 categories for each participant.

Problem Statement

Diya needs a way to learn a language through her phone in order to get something beneficial out of her everyday usage of digital technology. She needs to be able to learn the language of the country she wants to travel to in order to be able to engage with the locals there. For this she needs to be able to interact with other users on the app to share and enhance her knowledge and also learn basic sentence structure, grammer and interaction methods. As she has basic knowledge in some languages she wants to maybe enhance, she wants to have the freedom to choose her difficulty levels and have the oppertunity to recall her learnings on a regular basis effectively.

Hypothesis Statement

I believe in building an app that will allow Diya to learn vocabulary that she wishes to learn and is user - friendly. It should have small exercises that she can work on for a short period of time every day and has the possibility to to do revision exercises alongwith. Since it is difficult to sometimes understand the word or the context, there should be some sort of digital assitant or help center for her to clear her doubts or maybe a interactive platform where users can share their experiences or help each other with any questions. This would allow her to resolve her queries but also get the oppertunity to interact with native speakers to help in pronunciation and accent.  What is vital is that the app allows her to choose her level of difficulty. Along with words the app should provide basic exercises and readings on grammer and sentence building activities for added benefits.

User Personas

Based on the user interviews and the information gathered from the same I created my user persona named Diya.

User Flows

Based on the user interviews and the information gathered from the same I created my user persona named Diya.

Low - Fidelity Wireframes

Based on the User Flows I created sets of Low - fidelity Wireframes using Pen and Paper, which were prototyped using Marvel for Usability Testing.

Usability Testing

Using the low fidelity wireframes prototyped on Marvel I conducted usability tests with 3 participants.
